This is an infographic I created during Semester 2 of my first year at Nanyang Polytechnic under the Fundamentals of Innovation and Enterprise (FIE) module. We were given the freedom to explore any topic, and I naturally chose bilingualism, a subject that aligns with my deep interest in linguistics. Through this project, I aimed to shed light on the declining importance of bilingualism in Singapore and its broader impact on our society.

In Singapore’s multicultural society, language is more than a means of communication—it is a powerful connector that bridges our diverse ethnic groups and helps us preserve our cultural identity. The bilingualism policy plays a crucial role in ensuring that students are proficient in both English and a Mother Tongue language (Chinese, Malay, or Tamil), helping to foster a common identity while keeping cultural heritage alive. However, the infographic highlights some of the key reasons for the decline of bilingualism, such as the overemphasis on English, changing household language environments, and educational challenges.

I organized the infographic into three main sections to present a balanced perspective:

The comparison between monolingualism and bilingualism, emphasizing the cognitive, cultural, and social advantages of being bilingual. The causes for the decline of bilingualism, focusing on factors related to household language use, the dominance of English, and its prominence in the education system.Possible solutions to promote bilingualism, such as early language learning, fostering intergenerational language use, and raising public awareness about its importance.

In designing the infographic, I made use of Photoshop to curate and blend visual elements that would be clear, appealing, and informative. I employed icons, colors, and typographic hierarchy to create a clean and cohesive layout that guides the viewer’s eye through the content. Each section was carefully structured to ensure clarity and impact, turning what could have been a text-heavy message into an engaging visual narrative. This project became a platform for me to advocate for something I truly believe in—preserving Singapore’s multicultural identity through language.
